Even if you don’t have buckets catching drips on the floor, there are other ways to tell if there’s a leak in your roof. Some of the more common signs of a roof leak include:

  • Water stains on the ceiling and along the upper part of the walls
  • Dripping water
  • Discoloration or water stains on the exterior of the home
  • Smell of wet newspapers (this indicates mold or mildew)
  • Paint is flaking off, or wallpaper is peeling

Even without the visible signs of water damage, there are a few other indications that you have a leaking roof. Missing shingles or “balding” areas, especially after a storm or high winds, may mean that there’s a leak in the roof. Or, if you have cracks in the membrane of a flat roof or missing or damaged flashing or boot covers to roof penetrations, you could have a hole or leak in the roof.
