During the tropical storm season, water runoff from every roof can cause damage to the area’s waterways, roads, and other infrastructure. Green roofs retain some of the rainwater, and the plants on the roof utilize it for nourishment. This means less water leaving the roof during a storm while improving the vegetation on the roofs. There’s less pouring off into the streets and sidewalks by trapping some of the water, and the storm drains aren’t subject to as much overflow.

When you plant flowers, vegetables, or greenery on the roof, less heat is transferred from the roof into the building below. During hot Florida summers, this can quickly add up to a lot of savings on your utility bill. The plants on the rooftop protect the surface from direct heat and use the sunshine to grow. In the wintertime, the plants can keep the space warmer, reducing heat loss from the interior by acting as a layer of insulation on the rooftop.

Plants naturally remove carbon dioxide from the air, along with other pollutants, and release oxygen. This is a benefit for us since we breathe oxygen! In addition, the plants on green roofs trap dust particles from the atmosphere, making it easier to breathe. Better overall air quality makes everyone breathe easier and can reduce the severity of asthma and other lung diseases.

In places like hospitals and medical centers, live plants have been demonstrated to help people relax and to promote healing. Green roofs on these buildings can create natural views for the patients inside. Plants and green roofs can positively affect mental health in other environments, which many office workers may appreciate.
